Base of Hope

4 Nov

I am a sports person, er… the kind who likes to watch all kinds of sports, and not the kind who actually plays it.  I never had the strength or the stamina required to play any sports.  You know, a girl of small stature who can’t run around for more than 2 minutes can hardly be any selector’s choice!  Anyway no regrets there, whatsoever!

Initially I was attracted to the sports just for the black and whites of it [the winning and the losing].  Later though I started enjoying the unpredictability of it.  Believe you me, the sporting surprises are something that I have actually begun looking forward to.  It is no longer about Who would win! but more about Anyone can win!

Indeed, anyone can win!  I have won, too!!  My victory is to have had the pleasure of witnessing some monumental sporting surprises, despite being the kind of “sportsperson” that I am!!!

  • Chicago Cubs! [After a century and 8 years???  Say whaaaaaat!!]

  • Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Championship 2016!  [First ever??? So I hear]

Both the winning teams above were behind 3-1.  Cleveland is common in both the teams above.  Go figure!

  • Leicester City Football Club: the current reigning champions of the Premier League! 2016  [One more First Ever!!!]

  • Portugal UEFA Euro Cup 2016 Champion!  [Another first ever!!!]

  • Monica Puig, Rio Olympics Tennis.  [First ever GOLD  for Puerto Rico!!!]

Whether it is from the sidelines, the Baselines, or the recliners; I have enjoyed every sporting surprise with tears of surprised joy.  And so, as long as there is sports and its surprises, it shall remain the Base of my hopes!!

President Trump

3 Nov

I heard the news and I froze

“Trump has won the election and Melania Trump is the first ever First Lady born in a foreign country…”

I froze.  Time stood still.  My heart skipped a few beats.  What I heard sent chills down my spine.  I lost all consciousness.  How long had I slept when I went to sleep yesterday?  I couldn’t have slept yesterday and woken up on the 9th!

Of course, my mind was playing tricks on me. It was a daytime nightmare, indeed.

But what if it were to turn true!  What if this is indeed the news to go on air in a few days’ time!!  What if this was a premonition, a message from the future!!!

Sincerest APOLOGIES,

I hope I’m not too late for this one. Thank you for passing the baton [I’m sorry I took so long to finally work on it]. This relay was created originally by David at Taste Of Cinema who provided the following as a description and the aim of the relay…

“People love wisdom words from great minds. As a cinephile, I prefer director quotes than words from any other group of people in the world.Their thoughts on cinema not only provide insights into deep understanding of cinema, but also open the window to their own films, their genres, their filmmaking methods, thus they need to receive more exposure as their films did.”

The rules of the relay are quite simple really. There will be a list of 10 directors and direct quotes from them that explain their motivations and reasons in how they see their craft. Every time the relay is received by a blogger they will have to choose which director to omit and replace him/her with a choice of their own and then choose another blogger to continue the race.

I was kindly invited into this by my good friend Tyson who runs the site HEAD IN A VICE. Tyson is a sporting chap who likes to yell at me frequently but I still do everything I can to make him successful.

Other bloggers involved in this so far have been – Movie and Song 365And So It Begins…The Cinematic SpectacleOn Page and ScreenFlixChatterKeith & The Movies and Marked MoviesSo without further ado, here is the list of director’s that have made the cut…

Quentin Tarantino

“I steal from every single movie ever made. I love it – if my work has anything it’s that I’m taking this from this and that from that and mixing them together. If people don’t like that, then tough titty, don’t go and see it, all right? I steal from everything. Great artists steal; they don’t do homages.” – Quentin Tarantino

Seijun Suzuki

“Why make a movie about something one understands completely? I make movies about things I do not understand, but wish to.” – Seijun Suzuki

Pedro Almodovar

“When I make a film, I never stop uncovering mysteries, making discoveries. When I’m writing, filming, editing, even doing promotional work, I discover new things about the film, about myself, and about others. That is what I’m subconsciously looking for when shooting a film: to glimpse the enigmas of life, even if I don’t resolve them, but at least to uncover them. Cinema is curiosity in the most intense meaning of the word.” – Pedro Almodovar

Krzysztof Kieslowski

“You make films to give people something, to transport them somewhere else, and it doesn’t matter if you transport them to a world of intuition or a world of intellect…The realm of superstitions, fortune-telling, presentiments, intuition, dreams, all this is the inner life of a human being, and all this is the hardest thing to film… I’ve been trying to get there from the beginning. I’m somebody who doesn’t know, somebody who’s searching.” – Krzysztof Kieslowski

Christopher Nolan

“Every film should have its own world, a logic and feel to it that expands beyond the exact image that the audience is seeing.” – Christopher Nolan

Kathryn Bigelow

“If there is resistance to women making movies, I choose to ignore it. That is because I cannot change my gender and I refuse to stop making movies.” – Katheryn Bigelow

Paul Thomas Anderson

“I really subscribe to that old adage that you should never let the audience get ahead of you for a second. So if the film’s abrasive and wrongfoots people then, y’know, that’s great. But I hope it involves an audience. If not, that’s my fuck-up.” – Paul Thomas Anderson

Martin Scorsese

I think when you’re young and have that first burst of energy and make five or six pictures in a row that tell the stories of all the things in life you want to say . . . well, maybe those are the films that should have won me the Oscar. When Taxi Driver (1976) was up for Best Picture, it got three other nominations: Best Actor [Robert De Niro], Best Supporting Actress [Jodie Foster] and Best Music. But the director and writer were overlooked. I was so disappointed, I said, “You know what? That’s the way it’s going to be”. What was I going to do, go home and cry?

I’m a horror movie type of dude so I went with one of my favorite horror movie directors of them all:

John Carpenter (and it’s a collection of quotes):

“I made a decision back in 1978 that, in a trade off for money when I directed Halloween, I would have my name above the title in order to basically brand these movies my own.”

“In England, I’m a horror movie director. In Germany, I’m a filmmaker. In the US, I’m a bum. “

“One could make money and get a career going with a low-budget horror film about killers attacking on holidays. It is always flattering to have somebody copy you.”

Alejandro González Iñárritu

Alejandro González Iñárritu -> IMAGE SOURCE

“(On why did he not record an audio commentary for 21 Grams (2003)) I don’t like them. I feel that if you have to explain something, it loses strength. It’s like a magician trying to explain his magic, in a way. Those kind of things make me feel like I’ve lost something special about the film. The film should explain itself”

one more…

“I think that in order to be a film director, one has to be a warrior who shouldn’t be defeated by the daily onslaught of problems. We are all hanging by threads and are the mercy of various elements, if one fails the whole flight could come crashing down, and like a good warrior I’m not going to break down”

I’m sorry I’ve deleted 2 “quotes” to make it 10 directorsThe deleted quotes were from Directors Jean-Luc Goddard and Federico Fellini for no apparent reasons but to comply with the “rules”.

Choosing just one director’s quote was an arduous task because apparently I have so many favourite directors 😦 Well, I’ve picked Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu not only for some of the amazing movies I’ve watched of his but also because thanks to him Gael Garcia Bernal [sigh] made it to the movies. He’s also revived the latino film industry if I’m not wrong.

Thank you once again for this honour 😀 Now’s the tough part – passing the baton. to Mr. better than IMDB.

Look-alike Celebrities

After seeing Josh Lucas look-alike and his Mila Kunis look-alike girlfriend, it just struck me that there are quite a few celebrities who, I think, look alike. However, my friends have always said I have a ridiculous sense when it comes to who resembles who. You may also begin questioning it soon. However, here’re a few celebrities who resemble.

Apologies, but I don’t want to name names 😉

My 2011’s favourite movie

3 Nov

The scene’s from Crazy Stupid Love, which happens to be my favourite scene – had it been at least a minute long. For me, this scene [a minute longer, not the one you’re seeing in the link above] is sarcasm at its best, the tension, the anxiety, the comedy……

I can’t remember all the other movies I watched last year – I mean with the number of movies I watch, it should be obvious actually. The only movie that stood out, which of course came as a surprise was Crazy Stupid Love. I don’t watch movies based on the IMDb ratings et al nor do I read the opening night reviews. I just watch movies – as simple as that.

However, many times, the cast and the crew may also attract me. With Ryan Gosling in it, Crazy Stupid Love thus became a much awaited movie. The first time I watched the movie, I was devastated. I was totally devastated because for me RyGos has been on a pedestal of method-acting [whether he’s one to do it or not].

Ryan Gosling: My first RyGos movie was Half-Nelson – I didn’t know The Notebook had been made into a movie until after Lars and the Real Girl. He actually had me at Half-Nelson and so I religiously began watching all of his movies. This was why I’d picked up “Crazy Stupid Love”

First watch was disappointing. I didn’t know the movie was a comedy – it was only after I saw Steve Carell did I get a hint of the movie’s genre. I even double checked if I was watching a RyGos movie. I shook my head not knowing what to make of the movie – I couldn’t believe RyGos, of all the actors, had decided to lay himself cheap like that. UGHHHH.

However, on a second watch, I changed my opinion. He was brilliant. It was only because I was expecting some kind of Half-Nelson, Blue Valentine real girl seeking Lars that must have got me disappointed. On my third watch, he convinced me he was a better actor – a versatile actor. I’m happy I gave the movie the benefit of doubt because this movie has cracked me up during bad times, ever since.

Definitely THE one to watch out for

Besides, RyGos also happens to be one of the men I’ll forsake my singlehood for.  Ryan Gosling, in all honesty, is one of the best actors at present. With the likes of Johnny Depp almost catapulting into middle age, it leaves Ryan Gosling up for grabs. He’s got it all. He’s one helluva guy when it comes to acting and one helluva another guy when it comes to looks. He’s got it all, like HE’S GOT IT ALL. With Crazy Stupid Love, he’s proved his versatility. Besides, he’s also a musician – so maybe some day I’ll watch him in some musicals.

NB. I haven’t been paid to promote Ryan Gosling, not in cash or in kind. He’s just awesome and okay you’ve read it all. If I start ranting about him, well, maybe I won’t stop.

Romancing the UGLY

22 Oct

“Beauty lies in the eyes of a beholder” Amen!! But so does ugliness.

I am not rating the ugliness, so this is a list with no *particular* order. Because, no matter which number they belong to, they are [for me] downright ugly. Presenting you – my personal list of 5 ugliest celebreties… no, you need not agree [for here and now… I am the beholder, I am the blogger].

At number 5: This one here gives me a long face every time he pops on my screen – luckily I have a choice [the remote control].

Just-out Long

Number 4: This one here, I do find her ugly to the core. Thanks to a not-so-recent scandal, she has turned herself ugly in and ugly out. No penny for guessing!

Ugly 3: This guy reminds me of a guy I used to know, as a kid, who’d had a cleft-lip surgery. His strings of girlfriends [with the ONLY exception of ScarJo] have been as ugly as him [his now-fiance is not in my list just because I’m saving her for my new and upcoming expose : ugly celebrity-couple]. Any guesses??

The Fourth: Can’t stand this woman, she’s ugly uber-personified. If I bump into her in Aisle A, you’ll need to find me gasping in Aisle ZZZAABB. She’s like a total FISHer out of water. Can’t stand her acting, can’t stand her smiling, just can’t stand her… my only consolation, she’s married to BORE-rat.

Numero cinco: Oh how quickly have I reached the end and you’ve gotta trust me when I say “I’ve saved the best errr worst for the last”. He looks like a degenerated/ regenerated boy version of Ellen Degeneres with a touch of Miley Cyrus [who could have easily been my number six if it weren’t for my 5’s the limit]. The resemblance is just too uncannily resembling to ignore. Next time, you see him, look closer… you won’t be able to tell the difference!!!

i think it’s IN the name JUST-never-IN

NB. The 3 ugly boys: all share the same name. No, I don’t have a history of being ugly-dumped by anyone by that name. It’s a coincidence of the most amazing order, I swear. I like the name “Justin”, yes I do! It’s just an errr ugly coincidence… I guess.

Ugliness isn’t always bad… Lo and behold, I got something good out of it – a post!!! Three cheers to ugliness – Yuk! Yuk! Yukkay!!!

Five Fine Films

28 Aug

I love watching movies. PERIOD.  I also love watching the same movie over and over again. I watch movies of all genre and I don’t pick the movies ~ they pick me [pathetic attempt at being pathetic, I guess].

Hence, below are my most watched movies of all times in the order of *the times I’ve watched them*.

Number 5

Crashing in the fifth position, with 7.0 IMDb rating, is……. a sports movie – WE ARE MARSHALL. And like many sports movie, this too is based on a true incident. A good-looking hunk Mr. McConaughey [who I’d underestimated in the acting part] bowled me over with his transformation as a football coach. It’s such an inspiring movie that whenever I need the feel to boost my self-worth, I watch it and it is quite often, if I may add. No wonder it’s made it into my list. [Other sports movie I loved, liked and cried rivers over but didn’t make it here are ~ Rudy and Remember the Titans].

Why do I keep watching this movie? It’s because this movie has made me see winning isn’t everything, at times not giving up is a victory in itself.

Number 4

The movie that’s made into my number Four is the one that got Mr. Mark Wahlberg [one of the eight men I’d give up my single-hood for] his first Oscar nomination. Big names, twisted plot and still a great movie that I keep coming back to 😉 I watched this movie for Marky Mark and will keep watching for him again. He is the biggest *motive* behind this movie appearing here in this list.

It would’ve climbed  higher if not for Jack Nicholson. Sorry but I can’t stand the guy and despise him even more in this movie. aaargh Every silver lining has a dark ugly cloud, metaphorically speaking where silver lining is Mark and dark ugly cloud is jack nicholson.

Number 3

In the 3rd place is “Spirited Away”. It’s one of the most amusing animated movies I’ve enjoyed watching over and over and over again. The characters Haku and Chihiro are so animatedly real. I love the way the story unfolds and folds. I didn’t know it had won an Oscar Award in the year 2001 for Best Animated feature :0

I simply love the simple story line, the aesthetically appealing animation and the spirited-away feeling it brings about every time I watch it.

Number 2

The runner up for my Five Fine films is SNATCH  and trust me when I say I’ve lost count as to how many times I’ve watched this movie. I know the movie back to front and still enjoy every second of it.

This movie had me at “What do I know about diamonds…? Don’t they come from Antwerp?”

I love the exasperated/ frustrated conversation between Vinny and Sol, Turkish and Tommy… and Bricktop is scary as hell and I know I can go on and on and on about this one here. It’s hilariously witty or is it wittily hilarious. Just the thought of this movie is enough to crack me up 😀

Number ONE

AND now the finest film AND my top most watched Movies.

By mentioning this movie itself, I feel I’m doing less than justice to it. Forgive me Miramax but this movie’s been my therapy for a long long time to discard it NOW.

So my most watched movie of all time ISSSSSSSSSSS….. GOOD WILL HUNTING

Even as I was typing those 3 words, the music began to play in my mind. It’s only after I started blogging that I have stopped watching this movie. Otherwise I was used to watching this movie every night, EVERY NIGHT and I’m not exaggerating when I say that this was my weekend movie, weekday movie, feel-good movie, weak-day movie, strong day movie, breakfast movie, lunch movie, bed-time movie and every other genre I have for movies. For me, this movie is timeless.

Maybe the love for this movie comes from the fact that I can relate to Will Hunting in a lot of ways, except for his gift for mathematics.   The first time I watched this movie [a long long time back] I gaped and gasped when Sean says “Maybe you’re perfect right now, maybe you don’t wanna ruin that…” I knew then that he was talking to me. I have grown up from that stage to where I am today but had it not been for Will and Sean, maybe I’d have been a different ME.

Some lines are pretty corny but the emotional healing is just what I always count on while watching this movie.

Some movies that may make it to this list someday —>

6. The Devil Wears Prada

7. Up

8. My Best Friend’s Wedding

9. Crazy Stupid Love

10. Crash

USADA to strip Lance Armstrong of 7 Tour Titles: Are you KIDDING?

Living strong

“There comes a point in every man’s life when he has to say, ‘Enough is enough.’ For me, that time is now,” Armstrong said. He called the USADA investigation an “unconstitutional witch hunt.”

“I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999,” he said. “The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today — finished with this nonsense.”

Well, whether USADA or any other ASSada may allege/ accuse or strip those titles, LANCE ARMSTRONG is a hero, a super-hero who’s taught us all to LIVE STRONG.

Either we have our unsung heroes – who we lament about in retrospect [read regret] – or we try to crush the heroes who we have sung for… As I see it – First you are a nobody –> you struggle your A off –> maybe become somebody [after all] –> “they” take away everything –> allege and accuse you [don’t even know what that word signifies] until you become “nobody” again… :sighs:
